Kona Village Resort

Kona Village Resort

Hidden away on a secluded beach in a sheltered bay, the Kona Village Resort recaptures the atmosphere of Old Hawaii. Perfect for the traveler looking to get away, this charming resort forms a unique Polynesian village like those of old, with thatched-roof cottages specially made to insure peace and tranquility. Spend your days playing tennis, loafing on the beach, learning to sail, swimming in one of two pools, or participating in a wide variety of watersports.

Twice-daily housekeeping, refrigerators, bathrobes, slippers, and designer toiletries are included. For a peaceful, romantic atmosphere, the cottages have no telephones, clocks, radios, or TVs.

Kona Village Resort Property

No vehicles beyond the sand parking lot. No paved paths. No telephones, except in a phone center with Internet access. No air conditioning except in the phone center. No television. No radios. No CD players. No clocks. There's nothing to interfere with the natural rhythms and sounds of oceanside life regulated by sunrises and sunsets.

Kona Village is where celebrities come to relax and be treated like everyone else, which is to say warmly but not fawningly. Legions of guests return annually. Begun in 1965 when access was by private plane on the resort's landing strip, Kona Village has since tripled in size.

Amenity highlights: The resort naturally divides itself into two sides—light-sand side (south) and lava-and-black-sand side (north). Each has its own hot tub and pool surrounded by a sundeck with padded lounge chairs and thatched sun shelters. The lava side also has a children's pool. Hammocks, wood benches, and lounge chairs are scattered throughout the resort, making it easy to find restful privacy. The sand side includes a long, deep, crescent beach on Kahuwai Bay, which usually is calm and perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

Insider tip: Kona Village Resort occupies the site of a fishing village that was home to 10,000 ancient Hawaiians. When they abandoned the site they left behind burial and ceremonial caves, petroglyphs, and a few lava-rock house foundations—all of which can still be seen. Guided tours explain the history and culture.

All daily scheduled activities—including arts and crafts, stargazing, yoga, historical and petroglyphs tours, tennis on the resort's three lighted courts, the fitness center, water-sports equipment, and glass-bottom-boat and outrigger canoe rides—are included in the suite price, with no extra fees required. Also included are day and evening children's programs for ages 6 and up.
